Del Dotto Vineyard 887 St Helena 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon 9 Oaks

We bought this amazing wine on our first trip to Napa back in 2007.  We toured Del Dotto‘s original caves in Napa (pictured here to the left) and thieved wine straight out of the barrels.  If you’ve never done it, this is a must-do stop in any tour of the Napa valley.  Their new location in St Helena is pristine and offers some new and different wines that you’ll only find there; make sure to try the clay pot wines at that location.

The 2005 9 Oaks Cab was still in the barrel when we went on our first trip and was sent to us after bottling and we’ve patiently waited for the ‘right’ occasion to enjoy it.  We took advantage this past weekend, though first giving it some time in the decanter to open up.  This made a big difference (always fun to try it before and after) as this big cabernet with rich fruit, hints of spice (pick one…maybe nutmeg?), and smoothness of cocoa was truly wonderful.  It makes me want to go back and do it all over again soon…

  1. Agreed…Del Dotto caves in Napa are where it’s at! I think you should organize a Red, Whites, and Bites wine trip to visit these places as our wine and food tour guide!
